Military history is deeply personal to David Wright, whose family heritage reflects that of many Australian families, with ancestors who served during the First World War.\u00a0 David\u2019s great-grandfather, Arthur Lines, who served in and around Villers-Bretonneux was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry. He remained in France after the war, marrying a local woman from Villers-Bretonneux \u2014 a town of great significance to Australia, where Australian forces helped halt the German advance in 1918 and where the Australian National Memorial now stands.<\/p>\n

Italian War Fronts<\/h4>\n

The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 remains one of the most fascinating chapters in British military history, with the Battle of Rorke\u2019s Drift becoming one of its most famous engagements. Following the devastating British defeat at Isandlwana, a small garrison of British and colonial troops defended the mission station at Rorke\u2019s Drift against a vastly larger Zulu force. The remarkable defence resulted in 11 Victoria Crosses being awarded \u2014 the greatest number ever awarded for a single action.<\/span><\/p>\n

The River Kwai<\/h4>\n

The River Kwai is synonymous with the harrowing experiences of Allied prisoners of war during the Second World War and the construction of the Thai\u2013Burma Railway. Thousands of Australian servicemen were among those captured by Japanese forces and forced to endure brutal conditions, forced labour, disease, starvation and mistreatment. The railway became known as the \u201cDeath Railway\u201d, with thousands of prisoners and Asian labourers losing their lives during its construction.<\/p>\n
